I am HIV positive and pregnant. What should I do about drug treatment?

If you are pregnant or want to become pregnant, you must consider the general risks and benefits of drug treatment to both you and your child. Some of the drugs (such as efavirenz and hydroxyurea) should be avoided, because they may cause birth defects if taken early in pregnancy. The effects of other drugs are not yet known. It is important for you to talk with your doctor before and during your pregnancy so that you can decide together on the best treatment for you and your baby.

If you are already taking HIV drugs, talk to your doctor about the potential risks and known benefits to your baby if you continue drug treatment during your pregnancy.
